Raising Chickens!

We embarked upon an adventure last year that has proven to be a wonderful thing!

We decided to raise chickens!!  I don't mean just buy some chickens or baby chicks, but do the whole thing, from start to finish!  We decided, as a science project to hatch chicken eggs!!!!  And what a great idea it was!

We went out and bought a new Little Giant Incubator and Egg Turner at Tractor Supply when they were having their Chick Days, great deal at that time.  We the sent out an e-mail to two of our local homeschool groups for fertilized chicken eggs, all kinds and colors.  We ended up getting 19 eggs from 2 different people.

So on March 21 and March 22 we set our eggs.  For the next 21 days we watched and observed our baby chicks growing inside their protective shells.  We quickly went down to 17 eggs, one was clear and one had a very big blood spot in it.  As the days went on, there seemed to be movement in all 17 eggs, but there were a few eggs that we were not sure of, they were so dark, it was very hard to see inside them.  On April 8th we went into lock down day and could last for several days.

Finally on April 10th through 13th we had 10 chicks to be born.  Over the next weeks, we kept them in their brooder box and gave them LOTS of attention.  Curtis played with them nearly everyday and we took lots of pictures.  We finally got their chicken coop built, those days and weeks as chicks go really quickly!!  I never would have believed that an animal could grow so quickly, they are NOT anything like most other animals.
